Updated 09/04/2026

Having started with nothing but a decaying station building in the year 2000, the progress we’ve achieved in the years since has been nothing short of astounding. We’re regularly commended for the quality of our restoration work, having won numerous awards including the National Railway Heritage Award Scheme and others.

We have around seventy active volunteers of all ages and skills and always welcome more. There are a wide range of roles for all and you can either volunteer midweek / at weekends. We have working parties during the week and Saturdays which do a wide range of maintenance and infrastructure work. The Signal and Telegraph team have a number of individuals who work fulltime and they conveen working parties around their shift patterns.
We also have a very active platform staff and events team who welcome visitors at weekends during our operating season (Easter - December). The events team also run private visits for a wide range of groups such as clubs, schools and bespoke inclusion visits for specific organisations.

As a small organization, we’re able to offer an incredibly welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Whether or not you have an interest in railways, ability or previous experience, you’ll be warmly welcomed. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds currently aged 16 - 90, as well as a number of neuro-divergent volunteers, proudly supporting them to develop new skills and value their contribution to the project, we also provide supervision for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Please take a look at just some of the exciting opportunities we have to offer...

Excellent
Just so lovely you want to take the whole place and people home with you
A place full of charm. Such lovely warm and friendly volunteer staff, deeply knowledgeable, and kind. We had a shed tour too which was frankly awesome and a great behind the scenes insight. If you enjoy smaller calmer railways rich in story and heritage you should go for a visit.''
