We aim to be open to the public 10am - 4pm on Sundays from Easter - December 2024 with additional Saturday opening for events. If you would like to be part of our platform staff as a volunteer welcomer and to learn new skills please vist our volunteering page. New welcomers will be supported by one of our experienced volunteers and it is a great way to make new friends. We welcomed the Ariel Motorcycle Club who were on tour in 2022 with Sue H, Joan and Sue J forming part of the welcoming team. It was a great day and the video shows the departure of the motorcycles. Events at Kirkby Stephen East We are open to the public on Sundays from 10am - 4pm with some additional open days on Saturdays for events and throughout August. Events run 10am - 4pm unless stated otherwise with free admission (donations welcome) and charges for train rides (subject to availability). Some special events have an admission charge. Groups can book private events on Saturdays (subject to availability) email for more information. We also run All Aboard Club Events for children aged 4 years and above living with autism and SEND. Easter Saturday 30th March 2024 - Craft & Local Food Fayre as part of the Cumbria Easter Rally - a free event with classic buses and vehicles in Brough, Winton Kirkby Stephen and surrounding area refreshments in the buffet car (diesel train service) Easter Fayre and Cumbria Easter Rally 2024 Easter Sunday 31st March 2024 - Cumbria Easter Rally free admission and tours of our workshop, museum with refreshments in the buffet car (diesel train service). Free vintage buses between Brough, Winton Kirkby Stephen and the Mainline Station. More details on the rally facebook page Sunday 26th May 2024 - 818 Clerestory Public Launch free admission with charges for train rides - special fares apply for riding in the clerestory coach (details TBC). This is the culmination of four years of work to restore this vehicle and there will be exhibitions about the work in addition to workshop tours. Museum will be open with refreshments in the buffet car (steam train service). Sunday 16th June 2024 - Father's Day Event Free admission with refreshments in the buffet car, a well stocked shop including Bachmann Farrish and Oxford Rail. Tours of our workshop on the hour to see a wide range of historic rolling stock. Trains will be running that day and fathers have free travel. We will have a small number of model railway layouts. We also aim to have Stanton 50 in operation for driver experience - a chance to drive the locomotive (additional charges but no pre-booking required). (Steam train service). Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July 2024 - Kirkby Stephen in the 1940s Weekend- This event will showcase the home front in the Eden Valley. We are working with Chris Hallam, members of the Military Vehicle Trust and Kirkby Stephen Town Council to deliver this event. There will be exhibits around the site and in town with a free vintage bus service between Brough, Kirkby Stephen and the mainline station. There will be a steam train service subject to locomotive availability. Please check out the event webpage for more details (update to follow) Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th July 2024 - Westmorland Dales Festival Weekend - We are pleased to be part of the local celebration of the landscape of the Westmorland Dales and the people who live and work here. Kirkby Stephen will showcase conservation, countryside stalls, craft and food markets with entertainments and activities for everyone, There will be free buses between the mainline station our site and the town centre provided by Cumbria Classic Coaches. Train service - motive power TBC Saturday 17th August 2024- Railwayana Event SRC Director Alan Gunston and his colleagues in the Railwayana community will be providing an excellen display of a wide range of items for sale. There will be a steam train service subject to locomotive availability Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th September 2024- Heritage Open Days - we will be running a two day exhibition about the signalling project at KSE and there will be a chance to get hands on with signalling equipment, talk to our singalling team and learn about the history of the site. No trains will be operating that day as we will be doing walking tours of the track and no pre-booking is required. This is part of the National Heritage Open Days scheme Sunday 27th October 2024 - Halloween Event - steam service during the day 10:30am - 4pm open to the public. Evening ticketted event run in conjunction with Kirkby Stephen Town Council Diesel 'ghost train'. Details to follow. Saturday 7th December 2024 - Xmas Craft and Food Fayre. We will be running a Xmas event to bring together the local community. There will be a free classic bus service between Kirkby Stephen and the Mainline Station. If you wish to have a stall message us. (Stalls 8 foot table space with seating - free but donation to SRC appreciated). No trains will be operating that day. |
