Can't find what you need to know about volunteering with SRC? Then take a look at some of our most frequently asked questions about volunteering:
Who can volunteer?
Absolutely anyone can come and volunteer with us! We welcome anyone keen to get involved with the project and already have volunteers aged from 16-80 as well as a number of disabled and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Can I choose what I want to do?
There's a wide range of roles available year-round, but if you think you can help in other ways then don't hesitate to get in touch by sending an email to [email protected] or send a message via our Facebook page.
What will I gain from volunteering?
Volunteering rewards different people in different ways, but here's a few of the main reasons our volunteers stick with us:
- A sense of achievement, knowing that your contribution to a project has made a difference
- Meeting new people and friends
- A change of scenery away from the office and other life stressors
- The opportunity to share and use your skills, as well as learning new ones
- A sense of purpose and belonging which enhances your mental wellbeing
How much time is required?
This will depend on the role you've applied for or are interested in, but ideally we would expect you to come at least once or twice per month. Don't worry if you can't make it on a weekend, as we have volunteers on site on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well, so we can offer a degree of flexibility.
If you're looking to help out but can't commit to regular monthly visits, get in touch and we'll see if we can do something for you.

Do I get any expenses for volunteering?
Whilst we are not in a position to offer travel expenses, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for each role is provided. Overalls and other clothing items are provided to volunteers free to any volunteers that may need them.
Will volunteering with SRC count towards my Duke of Edinburgh award?
Absolutely! A number of our volunteers started with us through the DofE scheme, with some staying on long after. It will also count to other similar career-oriented schemes such as the University of Cumbria's "Career Ahead Award".
Can I apply to more than one role?
Yes you can apply to more than one role, as a lot of our volunteers often work across multiple parts of the railway, as well as enhancing the volunteer experience.
