We are committed to providing the best possible experience for people with autism, ADHD and special educational need and disability (SEND). .
This page will detail our strategy for helping visitors with autism, ADHD & SEND and their family or carers to have a great time at KSE. We have a number of volunteers who have neurodiversity and we welcome visitors with autism, ADHD and other abilities.
We have designated quiet areas for people with additional needs. Dr Sue Jones, one of our directors, has a specialist interest in neurodiversity and SEND in her professional capacity.
Please feel free to contact our platform staff to discuss your specific needs before visiting KSE and we will do our best to help you. We can arrange pre-visits for carers and family to assess the site and decide how they want to visit Kirkby Stephen East - pre-visit planning.
Bespoke Visits and Inclusive Train Play Sessions for Children Living with Autism & ADHD
We offer private events for children and adults with Autism & ADHD which can be tailored to your needs. These can include a play session which enables visitors to build and play with our huge train sets in a safe, understanding and supportive environment. Visitors can run the trains, build the track, and sort out any problems. The train sets can be put on the floor or tables whichever is preferred. The images below show our trainsets in use on a group session.
We can offer a tour of our locomotive maintenance shed and signalbox (due to be completed this year)
The locomotive maintenance shed is not suitable for wheelchair users but the signalbox will be fully accessible and is accessed by an outdoor path.
The cost for the visit can be discussed at the time of booking Saturdays (on non event days) are usually the best day to book as it is our quietest day and we are closed to the public. Interested email via the following link pre-visit planning.
