It might not seem like it at first glance, but the platform staff are one of the most important people on the railway!
The platform staff are there to meet & greet our visitors and first impressions matters. On non-event days we are able to offer site tours which includes visits to our restored signal box and viewing rolling stock in our maintenance shed. Platform staff also run our shop, signpost visitors to the museum and information boards in the train shed.Our shop stocks books, model railway items, local produce and other items to generate valuable income for the railway. Working in the shop requires some training in till operation and use of the card machine but new volunteers will be fully trained in this and mentored for the role by an experienced volunteer.
Our Events team get involved in major weekend operations such as the Model Railway Show and 1940s event in addition to helping run the inclusion visits and private charter groups. During the summer months we run inclusion events for people living with a wide range of conditions including dementia, neurodiversity, learning difficulties and carer groups. These events run midweek and are very rewarding. We also run a number of pre-booked visits for local school groups which occur throughout the year.
During events we also require 'back of house staff' to do roles including car parking stewards, exhibitor liason and site maintenance.
If you do not feel confident to do any of the roles above we still need volunteers to help with setting up events and we would love to have you on the team to help with this valuable role
