What we offer on your visit
We have displays and exhibits in our Musuem and Station Master's Office. We have a well stocked shop selling Bachmann, Graham Farrish, Gibson's jigsaws, children's toys and books, railway books DVDs and work by local artists. Our rolling stock in the main platform are easily accessible and can be viewed in our train shed and outdoors.
We also have a maintenance shed and workshop which houses our historic wooden bodied vehicle collection which is undergoing restoration. Access to this area is under supervision by a member of our platform staff. Unfortunately, access to the maintenance shed and workshop is curently not possible for those with limited mobility and wheelchairs.
On event days we have stalls and / or exhibits on the station platform and refreshments in our 1930s buffet car.
  • We upgraded our main toilets  in 2021 but they are not yet fully decorated.
  • After our model railway show in June we hope to have started work on out new disabled accessible facilty with baby change area.
  • We aim to restart running trains for our Railwayana Event Saturday 13th August 2022
Train operation
We currently have 1/4 mile of running line which extends West from the station along the alignment of the old Eden Valley Railway line. The services we operate are either Diesel or Steam Hauled with a compartment and open rolling stock.
The compartment stock that is currently operational is a Mark 1 BSK and a LNER Gresley Teak 3669. There are facilities for wheelchair users and their guests in both vehicles. The open stock is a Mark 1 TSO (operational) and a LNER Gresley Teak TTO 60505 (currently under restoration planned to be in traffic towards end 2023).
Train fares enable users to ride multiple times on the day of purchase. Train services start at 10:30AM and aim to run every 30 minutes or more frequently if required.

Getting Here

Postcode - CA17 4LA.

Kirkby Stephen East is on the outskirts of the small Upper Eden town of Kirkby Stephen. We can be accessed using the A66 from Scotch Corner or from the Tebay Junction 38 on the M6, following the A685.

A66 route: turn off at the A685 marked Brough / Kirkby Stephen. Drive through the town and we are immediately after the Croglin Castle Appartments on the right. Tebay route: follow A685 past Kirkby Stephen West Station (Settle and Carlisle Line) and turn left just after the bridge before the Croglin Castle Pub.

You can reach us by public transport, too. The Settle and Carlisle Railway has regular trains from Leeds, Skipton, Carlisle and several smaller towns along the way to Kirkby Stephen. We are a 20 minute walk from the mainline rail station.
On selected events we use a vintage bus to meet the mainline train service For details, please visit https://www.cumbriaclassiccoaches.co.uk/.
