If you want to join us at KSE, please feel free to call in at weekends. Sundays are the days that we generally have most volunteers. We also have some midweek parties, but they are 'ad hoc' and it is best to call in at a weekend for your first visit.
Restoration of the Porters Room and Motive Power Office as a permanent new shop was completed in November 2008 - please see the SRC shop page. Work on the restoration of the Stationmaster's office is ongoing and progressing well. We have put up the plasterboards and insulation for the ceiling and will be starting to plaster the walls shortly. The wood from the room is undergoing restoration and the flooring is being planned.
Our current projects include:
Repainting the station interior and exterior (deadline - ongoing like the Forth Road Bridge). This year we are aiming to paint all of the exterior windows frames and finish the guttering.
Drainage work - bulk done for now, but more to follow.
Laying track - ongoing work to complete the passenger-carrying line and adjacent sidings. See the trackwork page for details of work to date.
Signalling work - ongoing work of cleaning / painting components and we have now started positioning the groundframes and installing mechanical facing point locks. James Redfern is the lead on this and on site most Sundays. See the signalling and track page for details.
Gresley Teak coach restoration
Maintenance of rolling stock - we are currently dedicating a lot of time to work on the Yorkshire Engine and the local scout group helped with this in 2008.
If you are keen on trackwork and anything involving work outside the station building, then safety footwear is essential and you should check out the following links for high quality safety boots and other safety gear:
We also need assistance with the following:
Staffing the shop and buffet car (full training given).
Showing visitors around the station / site (a briefing on the project / history of the railway will be given).
Gardening (Phyllis Richardson is in charge of this) - we are currently working on our picnic area and removing ivy from the trees on site. We have a break from major work on trees during the spring and summer to enable the birds on site to nest and rear their young.
Event planning (all [legal!] ideas welcome).
Tea Person and Cat feeder!!
THIS IS NOT AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER THINGS TO DO
If you are interested in coming down, please contact the secretary for further information or just pitch up one weekend.
With the work done to date, we are getting closer to running passenger trains and we will be organising training sessions for all potential guards, firemen, drivers and trackside workers at the station throughout the year.
