Saving the past for future generations

Like all good stations, Kirkby Stephen East is home to a number of cats, the oldest and longest serving of which is 'Rabbit' and we have a young cat called 'Quaker'. There was a third cat called 'Gresley' who is no longer at the station.

Rabbit

We estimate that 'Rabbit' is at least 17 years old and she was at KSE when SPL bought the site in 1997. She is very keen to appear in any publicity shots that we have. She has appeared in the 'Northern Echo', on BBC television, the BBC Radio Cumbria Website and local newspapers. Her most recent triumph is as a character in the latest 'Jack the Station Cat' book: 'Jack and the Midnight Mice'.

'Rabbit' has her own food cupboard in the mess room and all donations are gratefully received. She will (reluctantly) share any donations with her fellow cat-mates.

 Quaker

This cheeky black and white character appeared on the Darlington platform and is trying to assert its authority, but is kept in check by 'Rabbit'. 'Quaker' is now becoming increasingly tame and has entered the mess room on a number of occasions when the station is quiet.

Gresley

This teak coloured tabby appeared under TTO 60505 which is one of our Gresley teak coaches undergoing restoration. This cat was very shy and has not been seen for some time - we believe that he may have been killed in a road accident.
